LESSONS AND CONSULTING
Hi!
My name is Jacobo Rouces, I have a Ph.D. in Computational Linguistics, and among other things, I work as a Spanish teacher and language consultant online.
You can read reviews from other students in my Preply profile but you can also buy lessons with me directly.
Here you can find more about me and other things I do.
I offer 1-to-1 lessons that can be tailored to your current level, goals, and whatever aspects of Spanish that may give you the most trouble. Lessons take place via video call, so you can take them wherever suits you best. You can buy lessons individually or as a package, and you can book them whenever you need, at the pace you want — it's not a subscription.
I only teach adults and older teenagers.
The structure of my lessons will depend on your level and your goals. Roughly speaking, I have three different approaches:
1 - For beginner students who are not preparing for an upcoming exam.
2 - For advanced students who are not preparing for an upcoming exam.
3 - For students preparing for an upcoming DELE exam at any level.
Below I explain each approach and how in some cases they can be combined.
1 - For beginner levels (A1-B2) without an upcoming exam, each lesson will generally contain the following parts.
1.1 - If you have had time to do homework, around the beginning of the lesson I will correct it while I give you feedback. I use Google Docs in suggestion mode, so the corrections and the comments are easy to see.
1.2 - I will answer any questions you may have come up with while doing exercises or while being exposed to Spanish in other ways. The explanations will range from technical aspects of language, such as grammar, to social and cultural aspects. If you have trouble with a specific area, we will make a special focus on it.
For these levels, I use a specific series of textbooks – each cover a level from A1 to B2, and you only have to buy that of your level – but I also share my own materials.
Sometimes, during the lesson, I write down in our shared document some notes and explanations, so you can review them later.
1.3 - From levels B1 onwards, we can also practice open conversation. We can choose topics of conversation to your preferences and needs: for instance, if you are moving to Spain soon, we can cover aspects that may arise when living in a Spanish-speaking country as a foreigner, such as cultural differences. If you are interested in history, customs, social issues and regional differences in Spain, I can lead conversations about these topics. If your main goal is improving your conversational skills, this part will be larger, but be aware that at the first two levels (A1-A2) it can't be very large.
1.4 - At the end of the lesson I'll give you some homework that you can do before the next lesson.
2 - For advanced students (C1, C2 and beyond) without an upcoming exam, I generally don't use synthetic textbook exercises as I do in lower levels. Instead, open conversation about advanced topics can take up most or the whole lesson, depending on the student’s preferences. I take notes about the mistakes the student makes and I correct them afterwards, so I don't interrupt the student. If the student wants to do homework, the most frequent form at this level is writing essays that I correct and give feedback on.
Even for advanced students it’s very usual to carry over gaps from lower levels, and when I detect an area where they are having problems, I let them know and we target it together. For these levels, I sometimes refer to external sources, but I often use materials that I have built myself to target difficult topics. For instance, I have materials about all the uses of the subjunctive and conditional moods, pronominal verbs and all uses of "se", the complete rules for tilde placement, etc.
The change from beginner to advanced levels is not sudden. As students progress upward, I progressively include less synthetic textbook exercises and more open conversation and essay writing.
3 - If you are preparing for a DELE exam, the approach is usually more targeted by using former exams. During the lesson, I can correct and give you feedback about the written part that you completed before the lesson, and I can simulate being the examiner in the part of oral expression and interaction, giving you feedback afterwards. The parts about reading comprehension and listening comprehension can usually be self-corrected by the student if he has access to the solutions, but if there are things that you don't understand, then we can also address them together.
In any case, for DELE students I also adapt to the student's individual preferences. Especially for higher levels, some students prefer a less targeted approach and more open practice, in which case I can do that too.
You can read reviews from other students in my Preply profile. You can book lessons there if you want, but booking them directly with me here will avoid the subscription model, and may sometimes be cheaper because it skips some intermediary fees.
